Mother of pearl inlay is the practice of inserting mother of pearl pieces into wooden objects such as Koran cases, desks, chests, chairs, mirrors, jewel cases and musical instruments. Craftspeople begin by cutting the inner shells of molluscs into different shapes.

 

How is mother of pearl furniture made?

Our artisans start by grinding off the outer layer of each mollusc shell until only the inner layer of pure mother of pearl remains, and then patiently cut out the shapes they require. These are then glued into whatever pattern has been carved into the wood.
